Gay Bonilla, RD, CNSC, is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire (UNH). She grew up in New Hampshire on 42 acres of land and woods where, from ages 9 to 21 years old, she had a horse, enjoyed riding and showed in 4-H throughout New England.
Gay came out to San Diego on exchange to San Diego State University for a semester where she met her husband. They now have two boys, one in college and one in high school. Gay stays in shape by going on long walks with her little mutt, Gaby.
How did you become interested in the field of nutrition?
I became interested in the field of nutrition my sophomore year in college after taking the most popular course on the UNH Campus, "Animals, Food and Nutrition." After I declared my major I found out that my grandmother was a nutritionist. I became a registered dietitian (RD) in 1987 after an internship at University of California, San Francisco. My first job was at Sharp Grossmont Hospital as an RD and I've worked there ever since.
Do you have a particular specialty or focus area as a registered dietitian at Sharp?
I have worked in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Sharp Grossmont Hospital for the past 26 years specializing in nutrition support for ventilated patients. I find that working at Grossmont is like working with a big family.
What is most satisfying about your role at Sharp?
Seeing a patient whom I worked so hard with and cared for walk into the ICU after a long and difficult hospital stay and say, "Thank you!"
