Scoliosis Treatment Options

While a normal spine appears straight when viewed from behind, a spine affected by scoliosis shows evidence of spinal curvature. Not to be confused with poor posture, scoliosis is a type of spinal deformity.

Types of Scoliosis and Who It Affects

  • Adult scoliosis (also known as degenerative, or de novo, scoliosis) — A lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine that occurs in adults over 18 with no prior history of a childhood curvature or in those with a childhood curvature that was left untreated
  • Idiopathic scoliosis (also known as adolescent idiopathic scoliosis or AIS) — A lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine to the left or right, this type of scoliosis most commonly occurs in adolescents aged 10 through end of adolescence, but can also occur in children under the age of 10 and can progress into adulthood.
