Mammography, biopsy, bone densitometry and ultrasound offered at Sharp.
The Women's Imaging Center offers high-quality mammography and specialized diagnostic evaluations given by a multi-disciplinary staff who are experts in meeting the highly sensitive and personal issues of each patient. Under the Mammography Quality Standard Act, the Women's Imaging Center is certified by the American College of Radiology and offers the following services:
3-D tomosynthesis mammography
Bone densitometry (DEXA)
- Needle localization
Stereotactic breast biopsy
Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy
Early detection of breast cancer saves lives. Both the American Cancer Society and the American College of Radiology recommend that women have a baseline screening mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40, and once a year after age 40.
At Sharp, receiving a mammogram is an easy process. A mammography technologist who is specially trained in breast imaging will work with you to take an X-ray of each breast in multiple views. Once the images are made, a radiologist who also specializes in breast imaging, will interpret the mammogram.
Digital mammography uses computers and specially designed digital detectors to produce an image that can be displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor, and transmitted and stored just like computer files. The technology allows radiologists to view the X-ray images in a matter of seconds. They can adjust brightness, change contrast and zoom in on specific areas to help detect small calcifications, masses and other changes that may be signs of early cancer. Being able to manipulate images is one of the main benefits of digital technology.
Sharp uses computer-aided detection (CAD) technology to review a patient's mammogram prior to the radiologist's initial interpretation. CAD technology — a recent advance in the field of breast imaging — detects breast abnormalities or "regions of interest" on the mammogram film and marks them. Although CAD is used, the radiologist makes the final interpretation of the mammogram.
Sharp also utilizes 3-D tomosynthesis (3-D mammography), which is an advanced diagnostic tool that uses high-powered computing to generate a 3-D reconstruction of the breast, providing clearer, more accurate views of breast tissue.
