Meet the Staff: Karen Rique, RN

Karen Rique, RN, has been with Sharp HealthCare since 2010. She has been working as a disease manager since April 2012. She received her bachelor of arts degree from UCLA in linguistics and Spanish and her master of science in nursing from Western University of Health Sciences.

How did you choose to work in the field of diabetes education?
I chose to work in disease management because I want to empower my patients to improve and maintain their health so that they can live a happy, fulfilling life.

What do you do in your role at Sharp-Rees Stealy as a certified diabetes educator?
I constantly strive to bridge the treatment gap for my patients with coaching, facilitating and education. My ultimate goal is to build a nurturing relationship that is full of trust, kindness and respect.

How do you help your patients succeed in managing their chronic disease?
I help my patients be more successful by motivating them to improve their health with open and honest communication. I always try to acknowledge what the patients' strengths are and address what is important to them. I also serve as a liaison among their doctors, other health care providers, community resources and educational programs that will enable them to reach their goals.

What is the key to self-managing a chronic disease?
I believe the key to self-managing a chronic disease is taking things one step at a time. A lifestyle change will never be a quick fix. It is something we need to do every day. I personally think it's very rewarding when patients are pleased with themselves as they slowly start making positive lifestyle changes.

How do you stay healthy?
I stay healthy by working out every day for at least 30 minutes. I try to walk during my lunch break, and I enjoy doing yoga, barre and weight training. I try to get seven to eight hours of sleep every night, and I avoid sweet drinks.
