Lily Padilla-Corona, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, has been with the Sharp Diabetes Program since 2004. She received her degree from San Diego State University and completed her internship through the Utah University Extension Program.
How did you choose to work in the field of diabetes education?
I previously worked in a dialysis clinic and realized, “If most of my patients with renal failure are here due to uncontrolled diabetes then I want to teach them how to prevent this from occurring, not just wait until it’s too late.” When people learn what diabetes can cause (kidney failure, loss of vision, amputations, etc.), a lightbulb shines and lifestyle changes are soon to happen.
What do you do in your role at Sharp-Rees Stealy as a certified diabetes educator?
I educate my patients about their role to improve their diabetes condition. I want my patients to know why it is important for them to make changes, and have them realize we are not here to punish or judge them. As their educator, I want them to understand diabetes is a condition that is controllable and will allow for quality of life if they learn how to manage their blood sugar levels correctly.
How do you help your patients succeed in managing their chronic disease?
I encourage my patients to live a healthier lifestyle in order to achieve better glucose control. Through our individual sessions or group classes, I provide them with examples of how they can choose a balanced meal that they will both enjoy and keep them at appropriate blood sugar levels.
What is the key to self-managing a chronic disease?
Focus on your specific needs. If there are no physical impairments, keep physical activity as part of your daily routine. Emotionally, maintain a relaxed mind set and learn to control stressors.
How do you stay healthy?
I never leave my home without breakfast. I plan ahead to include four to five meals or snacks daily. I also strive for variety in my diet. Most importantly, I make the time to exercise three to four times a week.
