Kathy Knippel has been a registered nurse since 1980. She has been with Sharp HealthCare since 1993 and a disease manager at Sharp Rees-Stealy since 2013.
How did you choose to work in the field of disease management?
I chose disease management because it is the health care of the future — proactive focus is on wellness and prevention, rather than treatment and recovery.
What do you do in your role at Sharp Rees-Stealy Disease Management?
I am a registered nurse with 32 years of experience. My role is to be an advocate for patients to help keep them connected with their health care provider and be as healthy and happy as they can.
How do you help your patients succeed in managing their chronic disease?
I listen to their needs and act as a liaison between them and the health care system, assisting them in reaching their goals.
What is the key to self-managing a chronic disease?
Accepting the disease and wanting to maintain the highest level of their quality of life.
How do you stay healthy?
I go for a brisk walk at least 30 to 45 minutes every day. I eat fruit and vegetables every day and minimal fast foods.
