For the 10th consecutive year, the Integrated Healthcare Association — a statewide leadership group that promotes quality improvement, accountability and affordability of health care — has named Sharp Rees-Stealy
as one of the top performing as well as most improved medical groups in San Diego County, based on its 2012 Pay-for-Performance program measures. This recognition for the highest overall quality places Sharp Rees-Stealy in the top 25 percent of the nearly 200 physician medical groups in the program.
Pay-for-performance programs are designed to improve quality of care and patient service. The Integrated Healthcare Association recognized groups based on performance in three areas: patient experience, meaningful use of health information technology and clinical measures that include priority conditions such as cardiovascular, diabetes, musculoskeletal, respiratory and prevention.
Patient experience was measured by overall satisfaction with appointment availability, communication with doctors and helpfulness of office staff. Health information technology performance was determined by how technology supports clinical decision making and ensures patients receive evidence-based care. Clinical quality was measured by the percentage of patients who received immunizations and screenings, such as Pap smears and mammograms, according to nationally recognized preventive care guidelines. Care for patients with chronic conditions and acute care needs was also considered.
“We are extremely honored and proud to be a double-award winner this year,” said Dr. Donald C. Balfour III, president and medical director for Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group. “It demonstrates the continued commitment of our staff and physicians to provide exceptional care, and the many outstanding new programs and quality measures we’ve implemented to improve the health care experience and outcomes for patients.”
Sharp Rees-Stealy credits its achievements, in part, to high patient satisfaction with their primary care doctor relationships as well as the close collaboration and coordination across the entire care team. Additionally, Sharp Rees-Stealy cites increased patient engagement with mySharpTM, an interactive portal that allows patients to manage their care and the care of their loved ones online, including scheduling appointments, contacting their doctor’s office and viewing office visit summaries and select test results.
“More than 124,000 patients have signed up for a mySharp account since its launch in 2009,” said Stacey Hrountas, CEO, Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Centers. “We continue to add new features that give patients greater choice and convenience, while also complementing and enhancing the care we provide.”
