Question: What is the best treatment for a sinus infection?
Dr. Jorge Pelayo-Garcia, with the Sharp Rees-Stealy Otay Ranch Family Medicine Department, responds:
Most sinus infections are viral and will resolve within 7 to 10 days. Since the body usually fights off viral infections, initial treatment is focused on symptom relief with oral or nasal decongestants along with nasal lavage, which can be done at home. If your symptoms last more than 10 days, your infection may be bacterial and antibiotics may be useful.
