Follow these tips to reduce your risk of swelling in the future.
Do:
- Always have injections or blood drawn from the unaffected arm or leg
- Have your blood pressure taken on the unaffected arm
- Keep your arm or leg clean and dry
- Moisturize your skin after bathing
- Protect your skin from the sun with sunscreen (at least SPF 15) and protective clothing
- Rest your arm/leg in an elevated position (above your shoulder or heart)
- Use an electric razor, not a blade, to shave underarms or legs
- Use insect repellant when outdoors, but wash it off when inside
- Wear gloves when doing house or yard work
- When flying in an airplane, wear a compression sleeve or stocking and drink lots of fluids during the flight
Don't:
- Cut your cuticles during manicures or pedicures
- Injure, scratch or bruise the affected arm or leg
- Lift or carry heavy bags, purses or other objects with your affected arm
- Wear tight jewelry or clothing
