Wheelchair and Seating Evaluations

Sharp Rehabilitation has trained therapists who are certified as assistive technology providers (ATP) administered through RESNA (Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America). These specialized therapists provide evaluations for clients requiring custom wheelchair power and manual assessments. Referrals may include:

  • Custom seating needs and pressure relief/skin management
  • Full (nonstandard) wheelchair and/or seating system evaluations
  • New or modified wheelchair to eliminate or minimize pain
  • Pressure mapping is used to measure pressure between the body and the wheelchair seat and backrest surfaces and aids in the determination of the most appropriate seating system
  • Replacement of current wheelchair and/or seating system due to safety risks, incorrect fit or significant change in status
  • Specific custom seating and positioning needs (postural deviation or those requiring trunk support)

The Wheelchair Evaluation Process
Our therapists utilize an interactive approach when conducting a wheelchair assessment for the client, including assessment of client lifestyle, environment and expectations; special needs such as special push rims, one-arm drive and low-to-floor models; and insurance coverage.

Sharp Rehabilitation recognizes the importance of having a device that is easy to maneuver, properly fitted, comfortable, durable and safe. A proper comprehensive assessment by a skilled therapist can avoid costly mistakes in the future.
