Who is most at risk for falls?
It's estimated that one out of three people over age 65 and one out of two people over age 85 will suffer a serious fall, so clearly, older adults are most at risk, but age isn't the only risk factor. Other risk factors include taking multiple medications at one time and having medical conditions like arthritis, visual or cognitive impairment, balance problems and gait deficits.
What injuries typically occur as a result of falls?
Injuries caused by falls can range from minor bruises to fractured hips. Falls can also cause psychological damage as many people who suffer a fall limit their regular activities, which can lead to reduced mobility and an increased risk for future falls.
How can falls be prevented?
- Make your home safe by removing throw rugs, clutter and other hazards, as well as increasing lighting and installing grab bars and a chair in the shower
- Stay active — Call your local senior center or visit www.sandiegofallprevention.org for information about free fitness classes; you can also participate in an hourlong fitness program at home by tuning into the San Diego County Television Network at 8 am and 1 pm, Monday through Friday
- Talk to your doctor about any medications and supplements you're taking and ask if any conflict with each other
- Talk to your physician about Sharp HealthCare's Vestibular and Balance Program, which employs specially trained occupational and physical therapists who can assess your specific risk factors and help you overcome them through education and exercise
