Meet the Dietitian: Lynne' Schatzlein
Lynne' Schatzlein, RD, grew up in Northern California and graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor of science degree in clinical nutrition. She's been a registered dietitian since 1988, has worked for Sharp HealthCare since 2002 and currently works at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center as an inpatient clinical dietitian.
Lynne' is married and has two teenagers, a 16-pound Maine coon cat named Scooter and recently adopted two more cats to keep Scooter company. You can say she has a full house now. Lynne' loves to walk around Lake Poway and keep herself challenged with a steep hike up Iron Mountain every once in a while, too.
In her spare time she enjoys working in the yard where she grows avocados, citrus and macadamia nuts. She also spends time gardening and enjoying her home-grown zucchini, heirloom tomatoes, kale, chard, peppers, onions and lots of herbs such as parsley, mint, basil and cilantro.
Tell us why you became interested in the field of nutrition.
I love being a registered dietitian nutritionist and especially became interested in heart disease because my brother died of a heart attack at the age of 33.
Do you have a particular specialty or focus area as a registered dietitian at Sharp?
The best part of my work as a registered dietitian nutritionist is working with my cardiac patients. I provide individual counseling for patients and their families while they're in the hospital and group classes through Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center's outpatient Cardiac Rehab and Prevention Program. Patients are so thankful when I give them practical, individualized nutrition tips to help them recover after surgery. It's great to see them become aware of the best ways to fight heart disease through healthy eating.
What is your most favorite piece of nutrition advice?
You don't have to be a vegetarian, but you should eat like one more often. Eating plant-based meals is the best way to improve your blood sugar, blood pressure, blood cholesterol and weight.
What is your favorite recipe?
One of my favorite recipes is baked kale chips. I never thought I'd sit down with my 13-year-old daughter and eat an entire bunch of kale for a snack. So yummy!
