Meet the Dietitian: Michelle Ulrich
Michelle Ulrich, MS, RD, received her master's of nutritional sciences from San Diego State University in 2011 and became a registered dietitian in 2012. She has worked at Sharp Memorial Hospital since 2012 as an inpatient clinical dietitian.
Michelle grew up in New Jersey and completed her undergraduate degree in communication (radio/TV/film) while playing on the women's basketball team at Rowan University. Her passion for nutrition and dietetics brought her to San Diego to pursue a new career as a registered dietitian.
Michelle continues to live an active lifestyle training for marathons and half marathons, biking, hiking, swimming and practicing yoga. More often than not, you will see her doing these activities with her twin sister, who also lives in San Diego. Michelle enjoys reading and cooking, especially trying new recipes and figuring out ways to make them healthier while adding her own personal touch.
How did you become interested in the field of nutrition? My interest in nutrition was sparked during my tenure as a collegiate basketball player. After graduating, I transitioned into running marathons and half marathons, where I read more about sports nutrition and realized what an integral part of training a good diet really was. As I discovered more about nutrition for human performance, I realized my own professional passion for nutrition and dietetics, impressed by the many opportunities within the field - even outside of sports nutrition.
I was also drawn to the profession for the chance to help others and make a difference in people's lives. My interest and passion for the field of nutrition continues to grow every day. There is always something new to learn and I love that!
What do you find most satisfying about your role at Sharp?I love passing on my passion as well as my knowledge and expertise in nutrition to my patients. I love finding ways to motivate them to make healthful changes to their lifestyles and be more mindful about what they put into their bodies. I love the feeling of walking out of a patient's room and having them thank me for caring about them and their health. I feel very satisfied at the end of my day knowing I have helped someone by doing a job I love and am so passionate about.
