In January 2010, Kay decided to donate a kidney and began a life-changing journey. She chronicled her experience in detailed journals, which she is now sharing here.

Waiting for the verdict following the two days of tests in San Diego was a bit nerve-racking, but the results arrived pretty quickly and I was pronounced ready for the next level of tests. I think they do them in stages, so that if I flunk one set, they have not wasted (the recipient's) money on expensive tests.
So one week after my first trip, I was on the road for the second trip. The mission? An MRI/MRA and blood samples for the genetic markers. The double MRI/MRA included a better look at the kidneys and a circulation study (I think) as an added check on the well being of the kidneys.
The drawing of the blood was a bit problematic, as they had a hard time finding a good vein. Three people made a stab at it before we were able to strike gold. A lot was needed, as the determination of the genetic markers is complicated (it takes four weeks, I was told) and crucial to finding a match for my kidney.
Again, I was expedited quickly, and was able to head back home late morning. It was a day of torrential rains in southern California, with flooding in many areas. Indeed, the area I traveled suffered a blinding rain. I was lucky to outrun the worst part and arrive in the desert before the worst hit home.
