Meet the Kidney-Pancreas Transplant Medical Directors

The Kidney-Pancreas Transplant Program is committed to providing personalized patient care through a multidisciplinary team approach. Our team consists of transplant nephrologists, surgeons, nurse coordinators, financial coordinators and histocompatibility lab staff.

These specialists works to guide patients through the evaluation process. They also assist patients in being prepared not only for the transplant procedure, but also to ensure they will have the best possible outcome post-operatively and over the life of the new organ.

Dr. Steven M. Steinberg, FACP, FASN, medical director, Kidney and Pancreas Transplant, Sharp Memorial Hospital

Dr. Steven Steinberg

Dr. Steinberg received his medical degree from New York Medical College. He completed his internship at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda and residency at the San Diego Naval Regional Medical Center where he was Chief Resident. He completed a Fellowship in Transplantation Nephrology at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (Harvard Medical School) in Boston.

He has held numerous positions including, Commander in the US Navy Medical Corps, Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California San Diego and he is currently Medical Director of the largest nephrology medical group in Southern California.

He is board certified in internal medicine and in the subspecialty of nephrology, and has been an active member in the Kidney Foundation of Southern California, American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and American Society of Transplant Physicians (ASTP). Dr. Steinberg is an active participant in numerous, cutting-edge research studies in immunosuppression that are offered to Sharp transplant patients. He has published many medical articles and presented at ASN and the World Transplant Conference. 

Dr. Barry J. Browne, MS, FACS, medical director, Abdominal Transplantation, Sharp Memorial Hospital

Dr. Barry J. Browne

Dr. Browne earned his medical degree at Loyola University of Chicago and completed his general surgical residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. While in Milwaukee, he earned a Masters degree in Pathology. He completed a Fellowship in Transplantation and Immunology at the University of Texas, Houston.

After a brief stop at Temple University in Philadelphia, he became the Chief of Transplantation at the University of South Alabama in 1998. While under his direction, the transplant program reported the best results in the nation three years in a row. He left academic surgery in 2002 and moved to Springfield, Mass., to practice kidney transplantation and vascular access. Before joining Balboa Nephrology Medical Group, Dr. Browne spent five months in Minneapolis gaining additional training in pancreas transplantation.
