A Declaration Spoken by the People of Sharp Memorial Hospital

When is something considered a work of art? When it shows a conscious use of skill and creative imagination? When it embodies the harmony, the beauty and the truth found in nature? When it powerfully brings the outside in and our inside out?

Art informs, inspires, enlightens. It helps us look beyond our abilities; to our possibilities.

It is the bridge between the ordinary and the extraordinary. It helps us, if only for a moment, touch the sacred, the noble, the heroic. It elevates our purpose while it deepens our conviction. It transforms us.

Starting today at Sharp Memorial, we will sculpt a new form, we will write a new script, we will compose a new symphony. We will give new meaning to the art of medicine. We will render a new future for health care.

Our work will be a balance. A balance between science and art, evidence and belief, logic and imagination, outward beauty and inward meaning.

Our work will be a belief. A belief that rejuvenation is possible and that healthful, enthusiastic, revitalization is waiting.

Our work will be a beacon. A beacon of hope and a shining signal that the best days for health care are still ahead.

How will we turn health care into a work of  personal art? By mastering the art of the personal. We will put the person, not the profession at the center of everything we do. We will chart a new set of vital signs that include the hopes, dreams, preferences and fears of each patient and their family. We will go beyond their medical history to their meaningful story in our attempt to heal the person, not just cure the disease.

We will immerse our patients and ourselves in a place of beauty and tranquility. A place that itself will be a powerful instrument of healing. We will go beyond the delivery of medical services to the staging of meaningful experiences. We will actively involve the family as an expert member of our treatment team. And we will create a new universe, one that revolves around aspirations not medication.

But most important, we will cast each person who works at Sharp as a unique and talented artist, someone who not only has a gift but is a gift. Beginning each day with a blank page, a clean canvas, an empty stage — creating something that is elegant of skill, curious of intellect and passionate of heart —  transforming what others may see as a mere job into what we see as a life’s work of art.

We realize that while our hospital is new, our insights and commitments are not. We will be the next evolution of The Sharp Experience in the never-ending quest to become the best place to work, the best place to practice medicine and the best place to receive care. When we are done we will have rendered health care, and ourselves, as powerful beyond measure. And we will have contributed to the most valuable art of all, the art of living.

Our hospital will be truly remarkable. Thanks to the personal art you will create each day.
