Dr. Dembitsky discusses treatments for congestive heart failure

Transcript

Dr. Walter Dembitsky: The treatment for end stage heart failure, the American Heart recommendations are heart transplantation, hospice or a heart pump. And so we’ve actually had many patients now that have come to us directly from hospice who are doing quite well with a heart pump in place.

Sharp has, has been very much a leader in the world and is recognized internationally and certainly nationally for work in these areas.

There are many, many people that need hearts. But there aren’t many available.

Right now we have about 70 or 80 people living on these pumps outside the hospital. We’ve had patients on pumps now for up to eight and a half years. And they’re doing quite well in their lifestyles.

So it’s been a really, a major advance for treating people with end stage heart failure.

There’s a difference between existing and living. And people with these pumps in are actually living.
