Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion uses dual energy X-ray absortiometry, or DEXA scanning, to test bone densitometry by measuring the bone mineral content and density of the spine, hip and lower arm. This measurement is used primarily to diagnose osteoporosis (bone loss) or osteopenia (decreased bone mass), to determine rate of bone loss, to determine fracture risk and to monitor the effects of treatment. Data is saved and scans are compared from year to year. More than 3,400 DEXA scans are performed each year.
