Debbie's Weight-Loss Surgery Story

When I graduated from high school, I weighed 110 pounds. After having children, going through a divorce and switching to a desk job, I found myself looking into the mirror at a 290-pound woman.

I tried numerous diets, but was never able to maintain my weight loss. Exercise seemed impossible because I was carrying too much weight and became exhausted almost instantly. Nothing was working.

As a result of my weight, I developed Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. I was taking eight medications a day and knew that I had to change in order to save my life.

My turning point came when I needed to buy a dress for a formal event. My husband and I are members of our local Elks Club and planned to attend an annual formal function. Shopping for a dress that made me feel beautiful seemed impossible. How could I contemplate buying a new dress when I couldn’t even walk without stopping to catch my breath?

When my doctor told me about Dr. Hugo Barrera and Sharp Chula Vista’s Bariatric Surgery Program, I decided to take the step to improve my health and physical appearance. I don’t even remember being scared or worried. I was determined to make a positive change for my life.

I received excellent care from everyone at Sharp Chula Vista. From Dr. Barrera to the nurses and nutritionist, everyone went the extra mile to ensure I achieved the best result.

The New Debbie
Today, I have lost 124 pounds and counting. I can walk four miles without getting winded, my diabetes is gone and I am down to just one high blood pressure medication a day. I recently bought a cocktail dress five sizes smaller than what I used to wear. I feel beautiful again!

With the help and support of the Sharp Chula Vista medical team, along with my own determination, I have changed my health forever, and the result has been incredible.
