How did you choose the weight management field?
When I was younger, I was always one of the most overweight kids in my class. When I started college, I realized there are many layers to weight management, that it is more than just eating healthy, it is a way of life. Having a personal history of being heavy and maintaining a substantial weight loss for more than 40 years, I am able to relate to my patients. I know what they are feeling, but I also know there is success. I love helping people become healthier and change their lifestyle.

What do you do at Sharp Weight Management and Health Education?
I teach and coach patients enrolled in the weight management program. As a Emotional Brain Training (EBT), I train our patients in the skills of emotional balance to help them manage the urge to eat in excess as a well to help them feel healthier. In addition, I teach the Healthy Hearts class, give presentations to corporate and community groups.

What do you think the key is to successful weight loss?
I think the key to successful weight loss is celebration. I celebrate my patient’s progress and help them look at the opportunities to learn from mistakes rather than being hard on themselves. I also think planning meals and having an accountability system also plays an important role in successful weight loss.

How do you stay fit and healthy with your busy schedule?
I always make time for physical activity at least five to seven days a week. Typically I swim one mile before starting my workday. I also do weight training twice a week and on the weekends I take a hike somewhere in the county.
