I have struggled with my weight throughout most of my adult life. After I turned 35, I found it much more difficult to find the time to eat right and exercise. As lead pastor of Skyline Church in East County, I have a very hectic schedule and am frequently traveling to speaking engagements. It seemed impossible to find time to maintain a weight-loss program.

But soon I started to feel the effects of carrying too much weight. I became short of breath after walking short distances and I was also starting to get pain in my right knee. I knew my body was telling me to make a change and needed help.
The first major step was to tell my doctor that I needed help. He referred me to Sharp Weight Management’s Medically Supervised Weight Management Program. In July 2004, I began the program with a goal of losing 80 pounds.
I was extremely impressed by the entire staff. They were warm, caring, nonjudgmental and, more importantly, great listeners. They really pushed me to set goals and gave me the tools to achieve them.
I faithfully attended every weekly meeting and followed all of the rules of the program. The shakes were delicious and satisfied my hunger cravings — I even learned a recipe to make the shake into a delicious ice cream, which I still eat every night. I also made exercise a priority and to this day find time to workout everyday.
I reached my final goal in December 2004, and have been successful at maintaining the weight loss since then. My whole attitude on food is completely different. I use the skills that were taught in the program on a daily basis, including keeping detailed records of my calorie intake and exercise.
My advice to others who think they can’t do it is to first ask for help and get the support you need to make that change.
As I learned in this program, “You can have excuses or you can have results, but you can’t have both.”
