As a leading provider of women’s care and women’s imaging, Sharp has mammography services available throughout San Diego County. Yearly screening mammograms are recommended for all women over 40, in conjunction with monthly breast self-exams and yearly clinical breast exams by a health care professional.

Size of Tumors Found by Mammography and Breast Self-Exam
	Average-size lump detected with routine mammogram (0.43 inches/1.1 centimeters).
	Average-size lump detected with first mammogram (0.59 inches/1.5 centimeters).
	Average-size lump found by regularly practicing breast self-exam (0.83 inches/2.1 centimeters).
	Average-size lump found accidentally (1.42 inches/3.6 centimeters).

*These images were created for viewing at 800 by 600 resolution on a 16-inch monitor. They will appear larger or smaller depending upon display size and resolution. However, the relative size of the detected tumor will remain consistent.

Performing more than 26,000 mammograms per year, Sharp has the expertise and state-of-the-art equipment to administer everything from yearly screening mammography to the most complex diagnostic procedures, including additional mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, ultrasound-guided breast core biopsy and breast MRI, when warranted.

Digital Mammography
Digital mammography is the latest diagnostic technology available and provides highly precise and rapid scans for the radiologist. This new technology uses computer and specially designed digital detectors to produce an image that can be displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor, and transmitted and stored just like computer files. This allows radiologists to view the X-ray images in a matter of seconds.

To decide which type of mammogram is best for you, and to identify the most suitable location, please confer with your physician and obtain a referral. Referral forms may be faxed from your physician’s office to the mammography center you choose.
