The Sharp Equality Alliance (SEA) is pleased to expand its virtual discussion series “Current Conversations” to explore wellness and mental health. Moderated by members of the SEA, this upcoming session will explore the rise in popularity of mindfulness-based approaches to treating and maintaining mental health and overall wellness.
Despite its popularity and its many endorsements by celebrities, neuroscientists, health and medical practitioners, educators, etc., many are still unsure of what mindfulness is and how its practice can be meaningful to them. This conversation invites you to participate, share and learn about how mindfulness can support your wellness.
Participants are asked to uphold the Sharp Behavior Standards of Mutual Respect and Courteous Communication.
Special guest speaker:
Maggie Burgess, LCSW, has been in practice for over 10 years, helping patients make tangible changes in their lives. She guides people through unresolved traumas and grief, as well as challenging transitions and stressors in their lives. Burgess helps her patients learn how to communicate effectively and cultivate more fulfilling relationships.
The foundation of her practice comes from mindfulness-based cognitive behavior therapy and dialectical behavior therapy. A certified yoga instructor, her clinical sessions blend traditional talk therapies with mindfulness, compassion cultivation and embodiment practices to help integrate changes.
Topics of discussion include:
- Mindfulness myths – what mindfulness is and is not
- How and why mindfulness is helpful
- Cultural factors that influence the teaching and practice of mindfulness
- Historical origins of mindfulness
- Practical ways to utilize mindfulness to support wellness
