This eight-hour class is intended for nurses who care for patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). We will cover the basic principles of ECMO as well as troubleshooting and patient care.

At the conclusion of this program, you will be able to:

  • Know common indications and contraindications for ECMO support
  • Describe the function and goals of ECMO support
  • Describe the difference between veno-arterial (VA) and veno-venous (VV) support
  • List the components of the ECMO circuit and describe the function and physiology
  • Explain hemodynamics in relation to the physiology of ECMO circuit function in conjunction with the native circulation and patient management
  • Discuss troubleshooting and emergency responses
  • Describe the head-to-toe assessment of the ECMO patient
  • Identify patient needs related to anticoagulation
  • Identify psychosocial and ethical issues related to ECMO
  • Learn from case studies
