Presented by Sharp HealthCare plus

This educational session will provide responses to many frequently asked phlebotomy questions. The responses will be based on the latest Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) venipuncture standards and reflect the industry standard of care for blood sample collection.

The questions that will be answered cover many aspects of phlebotomy, including safety and infection control, the use of tourniquets and butterflies, labeling and post-venipuncture care, processing and transportation of specimens and patient injuries and complications.

At the conclusion of this program, you will be able to:

  • List three phlebotomy safety/infection control process improvement recommendations as delineated in the latest CLSI standard
  • Discuss capillary finger stick and heel stick limitations based on CLSI standards
  • State the risks associated with tourniquets and butterflies and describe how the risks can be minimized
  • Discuss how QuantiFERON, trace element and ACD tubes fit into the order of draw
  • Discuss regulation of specimen processing and transport to maintain specimen stability
  • State the latest CLSI recommendations for responding to complications such as patient fainting, seizure and nausea
