This 2-day course will give Sharp HealthCare registered nurses an overview of test content for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Pain Management Nursing Certification exam. It also provides the prerequisite 15 CEUs required to apply for the exam.
Attendees will have an opportunity to review current fundamentals in pain, assessment, interventions, treatments and patient education. Practice tests will be provided to enhance test-taking skills and you will have an opportunity to enroll for the certification exam.
Learners are encouraged to attend both days, however, single-day registration is available for those who already possess the required CEUs necessary for the certification exam. Day 1 will cover pain fundamentals and day 2 will address pain interventions and professional practice.
After completing this knowledge-based activity, you will be able to:
- Describe the current science of pain pathology
- Apply pain assessment skills to case studies during group learning exercises
- Develop plan of care goals based on multi-modal pain management strategies
- Identify the benefits of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments
- Discuss cultural and health literacy considerations when providing pain education
- Define the ethical and regulatory pain scope and standards
- Indicate pain considerations with special populations (e.g., neonatal, end of life)

Melodie Daniels, PhD, RN, CNS, is the director of education, research and professional practice at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns. She is part of the Sharp HealthCare pain steering committee and has led numerous performance improvement projects, evidence-based practice initiatives and research studies with a focus on pain management.
The course is divided into the following three sections:
- Fundamentals of pain
- Professional practice
The in-person class will take place at 7930 Frost Street, which is the building located across the street from the Emergency Department. Please go to the third floor and as you exit the elevators, turn right and enter into training room 308.
If you elect to attend virtually, please plan to participate via a smartphone, tablet or computer that has a camera, speakers, microphone and large enough screen so that you can see and hear the presentation. Since this course is interactive, you will need to have your camera enabled throughout the class.

All class materials will be available online via Microsoft Teams. The instructor will email you the invitation to join the Teams group where you will be able to access the course materials for 90 days after this course concludes. Please download the Teams app at least one week in advance to review the information.
Lunch will not be provided, so please plan to bring your own food and beverages if you attend the class in person.
This class has been provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (Provider No. 70) for 15.0 contact hours (7.5 CEUs per day).
