Presented by Sharp HealthCare plus

A FOD (Foreign Object Damage) walk-down is a routine activity on an active aircraft carrier to prevent debris from getting sucked into and damaging aircraft engines.

Volunteer at this FOD walk-down aboard the USS Midway and help keep the historical museum clean. For this project, you will mimic a FOD walk-down and use hand tools and vacuums to clear the decks of any debris. A museum docent will be on hand to give a brief talk to provide historical context and reflect on his past experience with a FOD walk.

Cancellation Policy plus

If you need to cancel your registration for this event, please call 1-800-827-4277 Monday through Friday, 7 am to 7 pm, or log in to your account to cancel online.

Parking Information plus

There are many pay-to-park lots around the USS Midway Museum on Navy Pier and along North Harbor Drive. The 300-space parking lot on Navy Pier charges $10 for the entire day. Metered spots on city streets may be available with a two-hour time limit.

Special Instructions plus

Please make sure to provide a phone number when you register in case we have to call you with last-minute information.

Please account for and include the names of all guests during the registration process. To accomplish this online, please add as many guests as you will have to your registration basket before checkout.

Arrival plus

Please arrive 15 minutes early so that you will have plenty of time to park. Meet at the ticket booth in front of the USS Midway to check in for your scheduled shift time. Since the project starts before museum hours, it is important that you arrive on time, as latecomers may be unable to get on board.

What to Bring plus

  • Dress comfortably, wear closed-toed shoes and your Sharp Lends a Hand T-shirt. Open-toed shoes, heels or sandals are not permitted. It is advisable to wear layers since temperatures can fluctuate depending on where we are working.
  • Please leave purses, jewelry and other valuables at home. Sharp HealthCare and the USS Midway will not be responsible for any missing personal belongings.
  • Feel free to bring your own snacks and refreshments or refillable water bottles; there are water fountains available on board.

How do I obtain a Sharp Lends a Hand T-shirt?
The Sharp Lends a Hand T-shirts are not event-specific, so if you have volunteered in a past event, you don't need to obtain another T-shirt. If you are volunteering for the first time, you may pick up your T-shirt at Spectrum by going to the second floor and following the signs to the T-shirt location. We have sizes ranging from child medium to adult XXXL.

The Spectrum building is open from 6 am to 6 pm and you must have your Sharp ID for access into the building. If you cannot come to Spectrum, please arrange to have a Sharp employee pick one up for you. Unfortunately, we cannot interoffice mail the shirts.

Can I bring my children?
Sharp HealthCare encourages our team members to bring their families to our volunteer events whenever possible. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. To obtain a community service certificate for your child’s school, email Sharp Lends a Hand after the event.

For more information, please review the USS Midway FAQs page on SharpNET or email Sharp Lends a Hand.
