April is Donate Life Month, a time to honor those whose lives have been touched by organ and tissue donation, as well as inspire people to register as organ donors.
In California alone, there are nearly 22,000 people on the organ waiting list — including more than 2,000 in San Diego. One organ donor can save up to eight lives, and one tissue donor can improve the lives of up to 50 others.
Local people who have received an organ transplant, their families and Sharp employees recently gathered on the helipad at Sharp Memorial Hospital to form a blue and green ribbon in the colors that represent Donate Life America.
The ribbon was formed to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation and the need for more donors. Watch the video above to see the honor ribbon come to life.
To register as an organ donor, sign up with Donate Life America and select “yes” to organ donation when you apply for or renew your driver’s license.
