Music and mindfulness go hand in hand with the practice of medicine, according to Dr. Phillip Zentner, medical director of radiation oncology at the Douglas & Nancy Barnhart Cancer Center at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center.
Playing music requires a level of experience, preparation and mindfulness to master, but combining music, instrument and musician introduces a personal element that helps make something really special.
“The same thing happens in medicine,” Dr. Zentner says. “You can know all the data but there’s that additional factor that needs to come into play to see into the situation as a whole and put together a plan that really makes sense for this particular patient. I think that’s where the music and the mindfulness and the medicine really come together in a sort of common ground.”
