Back-to-school time can also be break-the-bank time for parents with long lists of school supplies to purchase.
Sharp HealthCare employees are doing their part to help cross a few items off those lists. Led by administrative secretary, Betty Cooper, staff at the Sharp Rees-Stealy Patient Contact Center donated 168 pounds of backpacks, binders, pens, pencils, crayons and other assorted school supplies to needy elementary schools in the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD).
This is the second year of the school supply drive. The employees and their co-workers at the Sharp Copley office building purchased and donated new school supplies — more than doubling last year’s efforts. The items will go to students who attend Title I schools, which are schools where a large percentage of the students come from low-income households.
Cooper works directly with SDUSD school staff to distribute the supplies. She sees it as a fun way for the team to give back to the community.
“Working for Sharp, we all feel we are helping our community stay healthy. This is another way of giving back to the community we serve, and it is an easy way to show that when we work together, we can achieve great things,” she says.
