Homebound patients receive hands-on care

Nov. 17, 2015

Annette Beglar-Starr with caregiver Jan Hodgson of Sharp Home Care

Annette Beglar-Starr with caregiver Jan Hodgson of Sharp Home Health. Beglar-Starr says her Home Health team feels like family.

Often, the best place for care and recovery is at home. This is especially true for individuals with new or chronic conditions, or who may be too sick to travel to the hospital. A team of skilled and compassionate caregivers at Sharp Home Health provides a range of at-home care for these patients.

Sharp Home Health coordinates nurses, home-health aides, therapists (physical, occupational and speech), medical social workers and a chaplain to best meet a patient's needs — for mind, body and soul. Sharp Home Health provides care for an average of 600 patients every month.

Caregivers offer an array of services for treatment and recovery that may include antibiotic therapy, chemotherapy, steroid therapy and pain management. Services also include specialty nursing for patients with cancer, as well as those with cardiac, orthopedic and pulmonary conditions.

Sharp Home Health is the only home care organization in San Diego that offers care to patients with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) — a type of mechanical heart pump.

"No one else in the community has a LVAD program like ours or supports LVAD patients in their home," says Lyleen Pricor, director of Sharp Home Health business services. Sharp Home Health also provides infusion services and acute or chronic wound care.

To be eligible for home care services a patient must meet several criteria that include being primarily homebound, under the care of a doctor and require services on an intermittent basis. A doctor must order and specify the type of services provided, and those requested services must be deemed reasonable and necessary by an insurance company.

Sharp Home Health services cover five geographical areas in San Diego County — South Bay, Central San Diego, North San Diego, East San Diego and South San Diego. Each area includes a complete team of nursing and therapy specialists to help patients.

As a registered nurse for Sharp Home Health, Jan Hodgson enjoys being able to bring personalized care to patients where they are most comfortable.

"I enjoy the connection and relationships you build with patients that come from caring for them in their home," Hodgson says. "I not only get close to the patient, but to their families too."

One of Jan's patients, Annette Beglar-Starr, age 80, says she feels Sharp Home Health's experts and caregivers are dedicated to her well-being.

"Sharp Home Health makes me feel secure that I will be able to stay in my home and receive the best care," says Beglar-Starr. "My Sharp Home Health team is more like family than caregivers. I feel loved, and that is truly The Sharp Experience."
