How True Health Appraisals can save your life

Sept. 21, 2015

True Health Appraisals

John Jenkins felt he was in good health. He was an avid cyclist in his spare time, ran his own business and had no apparent health issues.

At age 63, John wanted to learn more about his overall health and decided to schedule a physical. He chose a True Health Appraisal offered at the Cushman Wellness Center at Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion — a decision that may have ultimately saved his life.

"I came in with the motto 'no stone unturned,' not because I suspected any particular health problems,” he says.  “I just wanted to be aware of all aspects of my health.”

Comprehensive physicals with same-day results

Sharp’s True Health Appraisals are comprehensive, one-day physicals that delve deeper than the typical evaluations offered by primary care doctors. The customized program is tailored specifically to you, offering a thorough medical history review, a full range of preventive screening tests, advanced blood work and more. You receive same-day results and a one-on-one meeting with the medical director to review your health status.

John was assigned a True Health navigator who worked with him to complete a wide-ranging health questionnaire and to act as liaison between him and the medical specialists. Based on his health history, John had an MRI for his shoulder, a stress test and blood panel tests.

He also received a CT scan for his heart and lungs, which created cross-sectional images of John's bones and soft tissue.

An unexpected diagnosis leads to life-saving surgery

Dr. Gary Levinson examined John’s heart CT scan results. His findings were unexpected: John had heart disease.

"I was shocked," John says. "The stress test and the blood work came back normal. I also had no symptoms or history of heart disease in my family."

For the next two months, John underwent additional tests that revealed he had five arteries blocked at 85 percent or higher. He ultimately had bypass surgery to replace damaged arteries.

John said his experience at Sharp is what made all the difference in his treatment.

"The care I received at Sharp was excellent," he says. "I discovered a health issue that, without the test, I would've had no clue about. If I did not have the test, I may not be here today."
