On April 13, 2018, 39 inquisitive eighth-graders from Health Sciences Middle School spent the day at Sharp Grossmont Hospital, donning lab coats and stethoscopes, to get a firsthand look at working in health care.
The program, known as HealthCare Towne, is an all-day field trip designed by Sharp Grossmont to expose students to the many careers available inside a hospital. With curriculum designed specifically for eighth-grade students, HealthCare Towne is similar to Junior Achievement’s BizTown, as well as Qualcomm’s Thinkabit Lab, with whom Sharp Grossmont collaborated on the program.
The day consists of hospital-based scenario tours, from which students apply what they saw and learned to help them later diagnose a mock patient. Also included are skill labs and even a graduation at the end of the day.
“This program is the first of its kind, and we’re thrilled to be able to invite these students into the halls of our hospital,” says Sandy Pugliese, Sharp Grossmont’s community relations manager. “We’re looking forward to hosting more schools throughout San Diego, and teaching them about the many wonderful opportunities that await them in health care, no matter what their talents may be.”
Sandy Pugliese retired in 2019.
