When Dr. Harry Ellison’s three children were young, he half-jokingly advised them, “You can do anything you want, as long as you’re a doctor.” Jon, the middle son, took the advice to heart and followed in his father’s footsteps. He not only embarked on a medical career, but also chose the same specialty — radiology — and wound up starting his professional career in the same office.
His father couldn’t be happier and prouder.
“Working has always been a joy for me,” says the elder Dr. Ellison. “Now with Jon here in the office, it’s even more of a pleasure. To watch a child grow and then suddenly be an equal has been a huge source of pride for me.”
Beyond the familial bond, the Drs. Ellison share a mutual interest in staying current with the evolving field of radiology.
“It is great to review cases with Jon, and I learn every day from him, especially in the field of MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) where he has special expertise,” says the elder Dr. Ellison.
Likewise, Dr. Jon Ellison says he appreciates his father’s extensive experience in mammography and his leadership. “I couldn’t ask for a better role model and mentor,” he says.
Since the “senior” Ellison — as the technologists affectionately call him — began his career at Sharp Grossmont Hospital three decades ago, diagnostic imaging technology has vastly improved. Modalities such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and MRI were either new or emerging at the time. Now, digital technology, software and computers produce ultra-crisp images, which can be shared instantaneously with all the caregivers who are involved in a patient’s care.
Advancing medical technology is exciting, but it’s the relationships with patients and colleagues that truly inspire them. “It’s my goal to make our patients comfortable when I sit with them,” Dr. Harry Ellison said. “I derive most of my personal satisfaction from feeling that I may make things a bit easier for them.”
“So many people depend on radiology. The collegial atmosphere at Sharp Grossmont makes our jobs so rewarding,” adds the younger Dr. Ellison.
When the Ellisons are not reviewing images, consulting with patients or meeting with colleagues, they relieve stress by working out at the gym, cheering on sports teams from their former hometown of Boston, catching the latest suspense thriller or spending time with the rest of the Ellison family.
