Facebook recently launched a new streaming series featuring TV personality Mike Rowe. One of the first episodes of Returning the Favor — where Rowe finds everyday people who help their communities and, in return, he does something for them — sends the host to Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center.
But first, Rowe visited the Chula Vista hair salon owned by Snooky Rico, who frequently volunteers in the Barnhart Cancer Center’s boutique. Through her work, Rico helps women recently diagnosed with breast cancer by fitting them with wigs and providing them with make-up tutorials and loving support. As a survivor of breast cancer herself, the situation these women face is particularly personal to Rico.
“The boutique at the Barnhart Cancer Center is one of our best resources,” says Cara Fairfax, MSW, LCSW, a Sharp patient navigator, who toured Rowe around the cancer center. “Being able to try on and choose a wig that feels comfortable and looks great is a wonderful thing. With Rico and her “Loving You Through It” program, our patients are able to get all the style support they need to look amazing and feel confident.”
The episode featuring Rico and Fairfax aired Tuesday, Sept. 19, on Facebook’s new TV platform. Not only are viewers able to learn more about Rico’s story and the support available at the Barnhart Cancer Center, but they also will witness an incredible transformation to her hair salon that Rowe and his team made possible.
