The Caster Family Trust continues to make an impact on Sharp HealthCare's largest workforce — our nurses. Through a $50,000 grant, Sharp HealthCare will hire a director for our Center of Nursing Excellence (CONE) and begin implementation of a systemwide nurse residency program.
The goal of CONE is to recruit and retain the best and brightest workforce, while also further developing our own nurse leadership. A fundamental part of CONE, the Nurse Residency Program assists new graduate nurses in their socialization into the professional role, accelerates the skill acquisition necessary to work in the hospital environment and assists in keeping the new Sharp nurse in our family.
This new center will not only address the continually evolving nursing shortage and the costs associated with it, but will also allow Sharp to develop a supportive environment to further "grow our own," while encouraging current staff to share their knowledge and expertise across units and system teams. These efforts will ensure the enhancement of the nursing profession across all of Sharp HealthCare.
The center will ensure optimal patient outcomes throughout the organization by providing a common frame of reference, collective knowledge and shared vision. Nursing professionals will be able to foster a culture that promotes excellence and passion.
A structured center will encourage participation in decision-making throughout all Sharp hospitals and allow partnerships with academia, community and colleagues. Best practices — including patient-centered care practices, coaching, continuous learning and collaboration — will flow across the entire system, ensuring that patients receive the best possible care from their nurses, each and every time.
The Caster Family Trust has donated more than $240,000 toward nursing education across Sharp HealthCare since 2005.
