Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an eight-week program designed for physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other health care and service professionals. The goal of this training is to teach core principles and strategies to recognize difficult situations and to respond with greater stress resilience and self-kindness. Research demonstrates that MSC is strongly associated with emotional well being and can reduce anxiety, depression and stress.
The course is based on pioneering research by Dr. Kristin Neff, PhD, of the University of Texas and the clinical expertise of Dr. Chris Germer, PhD, of the Harvard Medical School-Cambridge Health Alliance. In-class activities include brief talks, experiential exercises and group discussions. The class is cumulative so that each session builds on the previous sessions.
Following this activity, participants should be able to:
- Apply three strategies to manage and ease one’s own caregiver fatigue
- Employ the skill of mindfulness to identify opportunities for self-compassion
- Describe key research supporting the benefits of mindful self-compassion
- Identify the three fundamental components of mindful self-compassion
- Integrate core mindfulness and self-compassion exercises and skills into daily life
- Relate to difficult emotions with greater moment-by-moment mindfulness, acceptance and ease
- Teach basic mindful self-compassion skills to patients and others

Susan Knier, OTR/L, MBA/PM, is a system senior rehabilitation education specialist with Sharp HealthCare. She is a trained mindful self-compassion teacher via UCSD's Mindfulness-Based Professional Training Institute, a certified compassion cultivation teacher via Stanford University SOM, and a trained mindfulness facilitator via UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior.
Kathleen Elling, MSW, is a medical social worker with Sharp Home Health.
This class series will meet eight consecutive weeks, plus one Saturday retreat.
Please bring your license number with you to class to receive CEU credit. You may also want to bring a journal or notebook.
The classes will be arranged in a semicircle of chairs for sitting. If you are more comfortable using a meditation cushion and/or a mat, please feel free to bring whatever you prefer.
