Sharp Grossmont Hospital Neurosciences Center breaks ground

The Neurosciences Center will be San Diego’s first center of excellence for patients needing advanced neurosurgical, neurological and comprehensive spine care.

On August 11, 2022, another ENVISION campaign milestone was achieved with the groundbreaking for the Sharp Grossmont Hospital Neurosciences Center in La Mesa. Sharp HealthCare leaders and team members were joined with community leaders and donors for the momentous occasion. The Sharp Grossmont Hospital Neurosciences Center, which will be located adjacent to Sharp Grossmont Hospital, will be San Diego’s first single center of excellence for patients needing advanced neurosurgical, neurological and comprehensive-spine care.

Nearly 800,000 people in the United States have a stroke each year — making it the leading cause of serious long-term disability. Sharp Grossmont Hospital is an accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center and cares for more stroke patients than any other hospital in the county, making it the perfect setting for a world-class Neurosciences Center.

“Sharp Grossmont has been deeply rooted here in East County’s heart and history for more than 65 years and provides a natural destination for a state-of-the-art Neurosciences Center,” said Chris Howard, President and CEO of Sharp HealthCare, during the groundbreaking ceremony. “As Sharp looks to the future and continues delivering on its promise to provide high-quality, compassionate care throughout the county, this center is an important next step.”

The center is set to open in 2024. This remodeled space will feature a new 16-bed neuro-intensive care unit, an inpatient progressive care unit, an inpatient rehabilitation unit, as well as a physical and occupational therapy gym.

The Neurosciences Center is one of the initiatives of Sharp HealthCare’s ENVISION campaign, which is part of a $2 billion comprehensive investment to advance technology, innovation and build new facilities over the next decade to provide San Diegans with ever-greater levels of quality care.

“It’s no exaggeration when I say, ‘we wouldn’t be here without the commitment of community leaders like Virginia and the Grossmont Healthcare District,'” said Scott Evans, PharmD, MHA, Senior Vice President and CEO of Sharp Grossmont Hospital. “Today, is a celebration as we become one step closer to realizing a dream — something we’ve envisioned — of bringing comprehensive, coordinated care to the people of our community, we know as The Sharp Experience.”
