An open letter to the San Diego community

Seventy-five years ago, a group of individuals came together to plan the first new hospital in San Diego in a generation.  The San Diego Hospital Association would persevere for more than eight years to the crowning achievement of the dedication of the Donald N. Sharp Memorial Community Hospital in 1955.

Beginning in the early 1980s and over the next two decades, the San Diego Hospital Association – Sharp HealthCare – experienced unprecedented growth, ultimately becoming San Diego’s largest and most comprehensive health care provider; and today touching the lives of more than 1 million individuals each year.

Now, Sharp HealthCare is strengthening its commitment to the community. The Foundations of Sharp HealthCare (Coronado Hospital Foundation; Grossmont Hospital Foundation; Sharp HealthCare Foundation) have launched ENVISION – a $250 million fundraising campaign in support of Sharp’s $2 billion, decade-long investment in San Diego’s health care future. 

The ENVISION campaign includes more than a dozen initiatives, including the Prebys Innovation and Education Center, modernization of Sharp Memorial Hospital and Sharp’s Kearny Mesa medical campus, continued growth of Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, enhancements to mental health services at Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital and expanded emergency and intensive care services at Sharp Coronado Hospital.

The campaign will also support the creation of the Sharp Grossmont Hospital Neurosciences Center, the Moore MountainView Hospice Home in Poway, expansion of the Sharp Rees-Stealy clinic network and growth of the Terrence and Barbara Caster Institute for Nursing Excellence, which provides nursing scholarships and training.
