Honoring a mother's love for giving back to others
Rachel Line knew giving back to others was at the heart of who her mother was. As a Lutheran minister by trade, Rachel’s mother Laurie Line dedicated her time as a volunteer at Sharp HospiceCare since 2013. Many patients receive hospice care in their homes, nursing homes, or hospitals. But for those seeking solace elsewhere, Sharp is proud to offer unique, home-like residences created entirely for patients and their families. Over the years, Laurie spent most of her time assisting at the La Mesa Sharp HospiceCare LakeView Home. Laurie’s daughter recalls how her mother felt blessed to be able to share her gifts of pastoral care and be present with families and the staff at LakeView.
Laurie was glad to do the basic chores of laundry and dishes. She often answered the phone and was available for conversation if that was the need. Her typical shift was Thursday evenings and she got in the habit of bringing brownies for the nurses.
In 2015, Laurie was diagnosed with a rare form of dementia. She continued to dedicate her time at LakeView until she was unable to do the work and had to step away in 2019. In 2020, Laurie returned to LakeView to spend the final days of her life.
For Rachel and her family, it brought them great comfort for their mom to be in such a familiar place. The care that she extended to others was now being given back to her in this place that she loved so much.
"All the nurses already knew her. Each one told me it was their honor to be caring for her now. I heard stories from the nurses about their time together, including the delicious tradition of Thursday brownies. I witnessed the incredible and sacred work that goes into caring for people as they transition from this world to the next. It was beautiful, messy, heartbreaking, joy filled, and holy. No wonder Mom loved volunteering here."

Rachel and her family gave a generous gift to Sharp Hospice Homes in honor of Laurie. A special ceremony was held at the LakeView Home in La Mesa placing an engraved brick for Laurie surrounded with her family and the Sharp staff who knew her over the years.
Sharp HospiceCare operates three unique living environments, ParkView Home in Del Cerro, LakeView Home in La Mesa, and BonitaView Home in Bonita. Plans are underway to build our fourth hospice home, to be located in Poway.
