Phlebotomy errors pose significant and avoidable risks to patients and phlebotomists. Implementation of global standards can help to prevent injuries and improve processes so that accurate, globally comparable test results are consistently produced.
At this educational workshop, we will discuss how to implement the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute's (CLSI) recently revised global standards for venipuncture.
At the conclusion of this program, you will be able to:
- Describe the structure of CLSI and its influence on standardizing phlebotomy processes
- Discuss the changes in the latest version of the CLSI phlebotomy standards
- Demonstrate the newly defined processes for identifying patients, labeling specimens, positioning patients for phlebotomy venipuncture and repositioning the needle for difficult draws
- List site selection limitations for collecting venous blood specimens
