Tuesday, Sept. 14 — Cancer and Stigma: A Candid Conversation
Around the world cancer carries a significant amount of stigma — the perception that a person affected by cancer is different than the norm in a negative or undesirable way. Patients are asked questions like “What did you do to get cancer?” or “You are a smoker, what did you expect?” They might also hear statements like “You are old, you should expect to have physical problems.” Indirectly some patients are surprised when friends and associates disappear from their lives due to fears that cancer might be contagious. Come join us for a discussion about cancer and stigma and ways to address these challenges.
