The affiliation must first be approved by a majority of Tri-City Healthcare District voters via Measure H on the June 2, 2026, ballot. Assuming the election is certified in June, the affiliation will then be effective July 1, 2026. On the effective date, Tri-City Medical Center will do business as Sharp Tri-City Medical Center.

Existing Tri-City Medical Center employees in good standing will be onboarded as Sharp HealthCare employees and will operate under Sharp policies and procedures starting July 1.

Medical staff bylaws will remain largely unchanged because Sharp Tri-City Medical Center will continue to have an independent medical staff as it does today. Medical staff officers, medical executive committee members, committee chairs, and other medical staff leaders will continue to serve the remainder of their tenure.

Sharp Tri-City Medical Center will be governed by a 15-member board of directors, consisting of 6 voting members elected by Sharp; 5 voting members designated by the District; and 3 ex officio voting members, including the Sharp president and CEO, the Sharp Tri-City CEO, a member of Sharp Tri-City’s medical staff designated by the medical executive committee, and the immediate past chief of Sharp Tri-City’s medical staff.

Sharp maintains a centralized credentialing verification office (CVO) that manages provider applications, initial credentialing, recredentialing, and monitoring of key expirable documents. With a target date of Aug. 1, the CVO will expand its services to include Tri-City Medical Center providers. Credentialing decisions, privileging, and medical staff oversight will continue to be governed by Sharp Tri-City’s governing body.

Approximately 40% of existing Tri-City Medical Center providers also practice at a Sharp facility. For providers who hold privileges at multiple locations, reappointment cycles will be aligned to reduce duplication of effort. This includes a single reappointment date and a shared reappointment application, helping streamline the process.

Yes, this access will continue. As part of the Sharp system, providers at Sharp Tri-City will also have access to the full array of CME offerings available at Sharp, including clinical conferences, virtual grand rounds, tumor boards and case conferences.

Yes, Sharp has a well-defined structure and processes for handling clinical trials. Sharp has a local IRB that providers at Sharp Tri-City will be able to access, as well as formal avenues to interact with central IRBs across the country. The affiliation agreement requires Sharp to maintain and operate the hospital for the benefit of the community with a minimum of 175 licensed beds and to maintain basic emergency, cardiac, neurological and orthopedic services. The first new services to be added at Tri-City Medical Center will be obstetrics and neonatology, with the planned opening of Sharp Mary Birch Center for Women & Newborns Tri-City in late 2026.

Sharp’s top three priorities are focused on restoring women’s services, establishing comprehensive oncology services and enhancing the campus infrastructure. Broader plans are in development to strengthen the physician network, expand ambulatory services and increase market share in major service lines.

During the first five years of the affiliation, Sharp is required to invest at least $50 million for routine capital expenditures and at least $50 million for strategic investments. The investments will focus on enhancing clinical equipment, renovating facilities infrastructure, expanding information technology and planning for seismic regulatory compliance.

The plan to move Sharp Tri-City to Epic will not be immediate. The affiliation agreement calls for full integration of Tri-City Medical Center and other associated businesses into Sharp’s instance of the Epic electronic health records system within six years after the closing date.
