Because histotripsy is completely noninvasive — no heat, radiation or surgical cuts — it is performed as an outpatient procedure. Most patients go home the same day, experience minimal side effects and can return to normal activities quickly.

Histotripsy is FDA approved for qualifying patients with tumors in the liver, including certain types of liver cancer. Approval for treating other forms of cancer is expected in the near future.
