Best diet for fast (and healthy) weight loss

Jan. 11, 2017

HMR

More than 70 percent of American adults are overweight, with nearly 4 in 10 classifying as "obese," increasing the risk for Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and some cancers. So it's no surprise that each year, millions of Americans start the new year vowing to lose weight. With a dizzying array of weight loss options, it can be hard to know which one to choose.

For the second year in a row, U.S. News & World Report ranked the HMR® Program — offered by the Sharp Rees-Stealy Center for Health Management — as the "best fast weight-loss diet." It placed second for "best weight-loss diet."

With a focus on daily physical activity, eating at least five fresh fruits and vegetables a day and reducing calories through healthier food choices, this weight management plan is designed to help participants lose weight quickly — and keep it off.

Unlike "crash" diets that promote rapid weight loss, the HMR® Program includes a significant education program to help participants make long-term eating and lifestyle changes that support healthy weight maintenance.

"Rather than promising a quick fix, we offer medically based, long-term weight-loss solutions," says Stephanie Metzner, a registered dietitian who works at Sharp Rees-Stealy.

"While losing weight requires thinking about food and physical activity in new ways, it doesn't mean you have to do it alone. We offer the support and expertise of certified health coaches, dietitians, nurses and doctors from day one until you reach your goal weight," she says.

While many believe that the key to weight reduction is to lose the weight slowly, research shows that fast weight loss is up to 30 percent more effective at achieving target weight, and that weight loss with lifestyle changes produces similar long-term results to gradual weight loss.

"Big changes on the scale are very motivating, which can encourage people to stay on the program longer and reach their goal weight quicker," says Metzner. "The structured meal plan gives patients the initial success they need to feel confident. Then our team of health professionals continues to support each patient when the going gets tough to help them achieve and protect their weight loss goal."

Metzner offers these simple tips to jump-start weight loss:

  • Swap processed snacks for fresh fruits and vegetables — at least five a day
  • Track all meals and snacks
  • Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day
  • Get support from friends or family members, or from a health professional at the Sharp Rees-Stealy Center for Health Management

  • Sharp Rees-Stealy's HMR® programs are available as in-person classes or from the comfort of your home or office in a live webinar format. Both formats offer the same outcomes. Visit sharp.com to sign up for a free, no-obligation orientation.
