Saving Lives Through Screening
A partnership for better breathing.
The Burr Heart & Lung Clinic at Sharp Grossmont Hospital is proud to be the exclusive health care partner of the American Lung Association - San Diego. Together, we're helping to raise awareness of and save lives through lung cancer screening and early detection.
Approximately 14 million people in the U.S. who are at high risk for lung cancer can be saved if the cancer is detected and treated early. If everyone at high risk were screened, close to 48,000 lives could be saved.
– American Lung Association
That is why we have partnered with the American Lung Association - San Diego to raise awareness of lung cancer screening and save lives right here in Southern California. Using a safe, low-dose CT scan, doctors can pinpoint cancerous tumors in the lungs early.
Along with CT scan technology, Sharp Grossmont Hospital offers advanced diagnostic tools, such as robotic bronchoscopy, to help diagnose lung cancer. We are the only hospital in San Diego’s East County to use this state-of-the-art technology.
Get screened
Take the Lung Cancer Risk Quiz from the American Lung Association to learn if you might be a candidate for a CT lung cancer screening.
According to the American Lung Association’s annual State of Lung Cancer report, every two and a half minutes someone is diagnosed with lung cancer, and 4 in 5 of those individuals will ultimately die from the disease. However, more people than ever are surviving lung cancer, and lung cancer screening is the key to early diagnosis.
Ready to schedule a CT lung cancer screening? Talk to your primary care doctor or call the Burr Heart & Lung Clinic at 619-740-4770 to speak with a patient navigator who can help you schedule an evaluation.
We are here for you.
As part of our partnership with the American Lung Association - San Diego, we offer a variety of resources to help you lead a healthier life, as well as support programs to improve lung health and prevent lung disease. Along with our lung cancer screening campaign, the Burr Heart & Lung Clinic also proudly supports the following initiatives with the American Lung Association:
Better Breathers Club
Better Breathers Clubs are support groups for those living with chronic lung disease. Members can learn better ways to cope with conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary fibrosis, and asthma while getting the support of others in similar situations. Led by a trained facilitator, these in-person, adult support groups give you the tools you need to live the best quality of life you can. Better Breathers Clubs are offered by Sharp Grossmont Hospital. Virtual meetings on various lung health topics are also available via the American Lung Association.
Community Connections
Community Connections is an educational speaker series that brings lung health experts from Sharp Grossmont Hospital and other health care and community organizations together to educate and answer questions from San Diegans on lung health topics including asthma, COVID-19, vaccines, lung cancer, and more. The series is presented twice a year during spring and fall and is hosted by Tony Gwynn, Jr., former Major League Baseball player and the San Diego Padres Radio Voice, who has dealt with asthma throughout his life.
LUNG FORCE Walk
The American Lung Association LUNG FORCE Walk helps raise awareness and funds to treat lung cancer, improve lung health, and protect clean air for all. More than 2,000 participants are expected to attend the next family-friendly walk and open-air festival that will be held in 2022 in San Diego. Look for Sharp Grossmont Hospital’s Burr Heart & Lung Clinic booth which will be on-site to provide essential information about lung health.
