Valerie Herzog, Sharp Grossmont Hospital
Following extensive research and a thorough review, Valerie found that Sharp Grossmont qualified as a major teaching facility. Through this reclassification, the hospital was able to improve their predicted rate of expected infections, thus reducing their standardized infection ratio. Additionally, Valerie’s work was shared across the system, resulting in reclassification of standardized infection rates and substantial financial gains for the organization. Her innovative leadership and critical thinking ultimately led to over $1.1 million in annual savings.
Registered Nurse Workforce Steering Committee, Sharp HealthCare — Multi Entity
To address inconsistencies in staffing across the system, this team developed a standardized scheduling process and a plan for requesting and approving incentive pay to fill uncovered nursing shifts. Their work promoted proactive planning, ensured appropriate staffing resources on each shift, and reduced stress and burnout of leaders and nurses. By instituting clear and specific guidelines for staffing, this team reduced excess spending by 40.5 percent, resulting in over $2.8 million in savings.
Data Management, Sharp Health Plan
Faced with reconciling more than 40,000 Covered California records with 88 variables on a monthly basis, this department explored opportunities to create and implement an automated framework to reconcile the data. After two months of verifying and validating the new process, the department increased the accuracy of its reporting and staff efficiency to 99 percent, ensuring Sharp HealthCare receives $50 million in annualized gross premium revenue through Covered California.
