Gina Passmore, Sharp Memorial Hospital
As manager of Radiation Oncology, Gina has dedicated herself to improving the department’s morale and employee engagement. Through the development of team-led committees and written policies and procedures, she created a workplace atmosphere that fosters pride. Her positive attitude is contagious, and she frequently recognizes employees through celebrations. As a result of her efforts, department turnover is at zero, Culture of Safety survey results have improved in nearly every category and employee engagement is at the 96th percentile.
Pathology Billing, Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Centers
To reduce the potential of employees’ repetitive motion injuries and create a more efficient process for entering pathology charges, this team collaborated to reduce the number of data elements needed to enter for each encounter. The team’s efforts reduced required key strokes by 82 percent, saving over 668,000 data element entries in a year. Ultimately, their work created a safer work environment and significantly increased employee satisfaction.
Emergency Department, Sharp Memorial Hospital
Recognizing an opportunity for enhanced team building and nurse retention, this team organized activities, which ranged from bingo to trivia nights, volleyball games, BBQs and paintball tournaments. Additionally, they created Great Educational Moments at monthly staff meetings, where ED physicians lecture on emergency-related topics. Also, a physician is assigned to new graduate cohorts to mentor them. Survey results for “Collegial Nurse-Physician Relationships” rose to the 90th percentile and nurse retention has risen to 81 percent.
