Frequently asked questions

General questions

Home infusion therapy is a health care service that allows patients to receive intravenous (IV) medications, fluids or other treatments in the comfort of their own homes.

To start home infusion therapy, you should consult with your health care provider who can determine if it's a suitable option for your treatment. They will then coordinate with an infusion service provider.

Call us at 858-627-5600 to get started. From anywhere you live, throughout San Diego County, our team is available to bring your care home. We accept referrals from patients, families and health care professionals.

Home infusion offers increased comfort, convenience, and the opportunity to receive treatment in a familiar environment. It can also reduce the risk of exposure to infections commonly found in health care facilities.

Patients typically need a clean and hygienic space for treatment, access to electricity and a secure location to store medications and equipment.

Cost and insurance

Many insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, may cover home infusion services. It's essential to check with your insurance provider to determine your specific coverage.

Medicare, Medi-Cal and most managed care and private insurance plans pay for home infusion services. Our staff can assist you and your loved ones in understanding your funding and payment options.

Safety

Home infusion services are typically recommended for patients who require long-term or continuous intravenous treatment, including those with chronic illnesses, infections or other medical conditions.

Home infusion can be used for a wide range of treatments, including antibiotics, chemotherapy, pain management, parenteral nutrition and more.

We will deliver and set up the necessary infusion equipment in your home. We will also train the patient and their caregivers on how to use the equipment safely.

Health care providers delivering home infusion services are skilled nurses, pharmacists or specially trained health care professionals who are experienced in IV therapy.

Yes, home infusion therapy is generally safe when administered by trained professionals and when patients and caregivers follow proper procedures. Providers take steps to ensure the safety of the process.

Health care providers regularly monitor patients through in-person visits, phone calls or telehealth services to assess the patient's condition and adjust treatment as needed.

Patients are provided with clear instructions on how to handle emergencies or complications. They should have contact information for their health care provider or an on-call service.

Infusion service providers will typically arrange for the safe disposal of used medical supplies, such as needles and IV bags, following health care regulations.
