Lou Bareno, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center
As a volunteer and auxiliary member, there is no job too big for Lou. Through his passion to help others find peace and understanding, he dedicated himself to the success of the Sharp Chula Vista mental health resources fair, “Changing Minds/Minds Matter.” His tireless efforts included acting as the fair’s media personality, raising awareness in the community, recruiting volunteers and handling registration and wayfinding at the event. He also raised cash and gift donations of $4,600.
Hepatitis A Response and Prevention, Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital
After an unprecedented outbreak of hepatitis A, this team recognized their behavioral health population was especially vulnerable and developed a screening and vaccination program. Qualifying inpatients were vaccinated, and mobile vaccination clinics were set up to serve outpatients. The team also created an infection prevention campaign and worked with Food and Nutrition Services to prevent the spread of infection through food. Their innovative efforts successfully mitigated the potential spread of hepatitis A throughout San Diego.
Emergency Department, Sharp Coronado Hospital
To demonstrate the consequences of drunk driving, this department partnered with local agencies to provide a program called Every 15 Minutes. High school students witnessed a staged car accident with first responders present, then experienced a school day with the victims considered dead. In addition to going above expectations by volunteering to take part in this lifesaving program, and adjusting assignments to allow the event to take place, this department strengthened their relationships with the community and local agencies.
